What counts as a good credit score in the UK?

Three credit reference agencies calculate UK credit scores: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each uses its own scale, so the number you see will look different depending on where you check, but the underlying picture of your credit history is broadly the same across all three.

Agency

Scale

Good credit band

Experian

0 to 1,250

861 to 1,000

Equifax

0 to 1,000

531 to 670

TransUnion

0 to 710

604 to 627

Good sits above fair and below very good on all three scales. If your score is at the lower end of the good band, closer to fair than to very good, your options may be narrower than someone approaching the top of the good range. Read more about credit cards for fair credit.

For a full breakdown of each agency's scoring system, see our guide to what is a good credit score.

What credit cards can I get with a good credit score?

A good credit score puts some mainstream cards within reach. Depending on your full financial picture, this can include cards with introductory 0% periods on purchases or balance transfers. The longest and most competitive deals on those products, however, tend to go to applicants with very good or excellent scores.

Premium rewards cards, cashback products, and cards built for travel perks often look for applicants with very good or excellent credit, though each lender sets its own criteria.

Your credit score is also one input, not the whole picture. Lenders typically look at your income, employment status, the amount of credit you already have, and your overall affordability.

Someone with a solid good score can still be declined if the rest of their financial profile does not meet a specific lender's criteria. That is not unusual and it does not mean something is wrong with your file.

Will I definitely be accepted for a credit card with a good score?

No. A good credit score improves your chances compared to those with poor scores, but does not guarantee approval.

Remember, every full application involves a hard search on your credit file. Too many hard searches in a short period can reduce your score, so before applying to any lender, use a soft search eligibility checker to see your likelihood of being accepted without leaving any mark on your file.

You can check your eligibility for the Zable card using our credit card eligibility checker with no impact on your credit score.

You're also up to 35% more likely to get accepted when you link your bank account.

Is a credit builder card still worth it when my credit score is good?

For many people at the good tier, yes.

Moving from good to very good or excellent takes consistent credit use over time. Using a card regularly for everyday spending, paying it off in full each month, and keeping well within your limit all contribute to a stronger credit history. That pattern compounds.

There is also a practical point. Some people at the good level still find that mainstream lenders decline their application. A good score is a meaningful step forward, but if your credit history is relatively short or there are older issues still showing on your file, some lenders will still say no. Zable could accept you even if you're getting declined elsewhere.

FAQs about good credit credit cards

What is a good credit score in the UK?

Good credit sits above fair and below very good on all three UK credit reference agency scales. For Experian, which scores out of 1,250, the good band runs from 861 to 1,000. For Equifax, which scores out of 1,000, it is 531 to 670. For TransUnion, which scores out of 710, it is 604 to 627. See our full guide to what is a good credit score.

Will I get accepted for a credit card with a good credit score?

You’re more likely to be approved for a credit card with a good score compared to a poor score, however it’s not guaranteed. Lenders also consider your income, existing debts, and overall affordability. Use a soft search eligibility checker before applying so you can gauge your chances without affecting your score.

Does applying for a credit card affect my credit score?

A full credit card application involves a hard search that shows on your file and can cause a temporary dip to your score. Multiple hard searches in a short period can lower your score further. To avoid this, run a soft search eligibility check first. Read more about how applying for a credit card affects your credit score.

Is it worth keeping a credit builder card once my score is good?

Often yes. Consistent, responsible use of a card continues to build your credit history, which helps move your score toward very good and excellent over time. Keeping an account open and active, without using too high a proportion of your limit, is generally positive for your file.

How long does it take to go from good to excellent credit?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on your individual history, how you use credit, and how any past issues age off your file. For practical steps you can take now, see our guide on how to increase your credit score.
